California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) is public pension fund based in Sacramento, California. The fund was established by state law in 1932 to provide retirement benefits for state employees. The fund manages retirement and health benefits of public employees, retirees and their families, and more than 3,000 employers. The pension fund is managed and administrated by the Board members.

CalPERS' five-year plan to reduce the number of general partners within its private equity portfolio includes a program that will allocate up to $2 billion to growing fund managers. The retirement system plans to invest $36.5 billion in private equity until 2020. The retirement system is restructuring and rebalancing its private equity program, including upping its focus on customized investment accounts and co-investments.
