According to PitchBook's database, there have been more global VC financings of at least $50 million this year so far (313) than the previous two years combined (305), and the amount of capital raised through those financings this year ($38.4B) easily eclipses the past two years' total ($28.7B). Capital invested through $50 million+ deals has actually risen each quarter since the end of 4Q 2012, but the quarter-to-quarter increase shot up substantially starting in 1Q 2014. Another interesting trend is how much the investment focus of $50 million+ deals has changed throughout this year; the B2C sector, for instance, has increased its share of deal flow each quarter, from 16% in 1Q to 50% in 4Q. Meanwhile, the IT sector's deal share has slipped each quarter, falling from 50% in 1Q to 20% in 4Q. The median deal size of financings over $50 million in 2014 is $76 million, the highest figure in at least a decade.
