Ah, the Midwest—America’s Heartland and a happening hub for the manufacturing and farming sectors of the U.S. economy. The Midwest is also rife with VC activity, according to the PitchBook Platform. Since the beginning of 2009, 730 companies headquartered in the Midwest have received financing from VC investors, spanning 1,144 deals. 2011 was an especially hot year for the often frigid region as the total capital invested shot up from $1.7 billion in 2010 to $3.9 billion. Things took a dip last year, however, as total capital invested dropped back down to $1.5 billion. Contributing to 2011’s sudden upswing were two massive deals for Chicago-based companies: Groupon’s $950 million jackpot and Chama Technologaes’ $400 million Series B financing.
