Are VC Funds in the $100M-$250M Range on the Rise?
December 28, 2012
With the passing of a major milestone for Sierra Ventures’ tenth fund, we took to the PitchBook Platform to investigate U.S. VC funds in the $100 million to $250 million range. Since 2007, 115 investors have closed 133 funds in this bracket, although activity in recent years has been down. After a watershed year in 2008—specifically, 37 funds racking up a whopping $5.7 billion in total capital—things took a rather dramatic dip in 2009, which saw only 17 funds close and a total of $2.6 billion of total capital raised. Activity slowed even more in 2011, although 2012 is showing a slight upward trend with 14 funds and $2.33 billion to date. With 160 investments, First Round Capital has established itself as the most active investor in this bracket by a long shot; True Ventures and Foundry Group trail behind with 80 and 57 investments, respectively.
