AthenaHealth to Expand Mobile Capabilities with Epocrates Deal

Medical management software maker AthenaHealth (NASDAQ: ATHN) has agreed to acquire Epocrates (NASDAQ: EPOC), a developer of clinical information and support tools, for $293 million in cash. With the acquisition, AthenaHealth will obtain an iPhone app and establish a presence in the EMR market. The deal will provide an exit for VC investors that continued to hold a stake in Epocrates following the company’s 2011 IPO, including Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Bay City Capital, Three Arch Partners and Sprout Group.
