Facebook’s staggering $16 billion IPO in 2012 dropped many jaws, but billion dollar exits haven’t been so few and far between. According to the PitchBook Platform, VC investors have exited 72 U.S.-headquartered companies through corporate acquisitions, PE buyouts or IPOs of at least $1 billion. Last year saw more activity for these exits in terms of count and total capital exited than any year since 2000, with ten transactions totaling over $36 billion. In addition to those completed exits, six billion-dollar exits have also been announced but have yet to close, including Yahoo’s very recently announced $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr.
