Canadian VC Flies High Above 2010, Ontario Taking Lion's Share
November 09, 2012
Since 2010, Canada has been heating up with increased activity on the venture capital front. After starting off a bit chilly with $473 million of total capital invested in 2010, Canadian VC investment more than doubled in 2011, bringing in an impressive $978 million, thanks to a standout third quarter with big financings for Enerkem and Enobia. To date, 2012 is hovering in the middle with $606 million raised. One thing has remained consistent amid the marked increase in activity—Ontario’s status as a VC hotbed. The province is responsible for 45% of Canadian venture activity since 2010, with British Columbia and Quebec trailing behind at 23% and 19%, respectively.
