Private equity investors have exited 165 U.S.- or Canada-based companies in the Energy industry since the beginning of 2009, according to the PitchBook Platform. And the trend has been going up. Exits stalled at 15 in 2009 before spiking to 43 in 2010, 46 in 2011 and 55 in 2012. Corporate acquisitions have been the method of choice for firms, accounting for two-thirds of all of the exit deals since 2009. Texas-based companies have also been popular, representing almost half of the exit activity (49%), with Oklahoma and Colorado a distant second and third (7% and 6%, respectively).
