Since the beginning of 2003, VC investors have injected capital into 410 U.S.-headquartered healthcare technology systems companies, according to the PitchBook Platform. Aside from a slight spike in 2007, the number of deals completed each year in the space has increased during that timeframe, nearly doubling from 41 in 2003 to 77 in 2008, and then again doubling to 155 in 2012. The industry has seen some mega-deals in the last decade, with multiple companies landing investments of $100 million or more. Those deals include ikaSystems’ $120 million financing in 2010, Essence Group’s $101 million round in 2007 and Castlight Health’s $100 million funding in 2012.
