As an investor, Thiel has leveraged his background in tech to help Founders Fund back several unicorns, as well as other companies that seem well on their way to unicorn status. The firm holds companies including Stripe ($3.6 billion valuation at its latest funding), Airbnb ($10.8 billion) and Lyft ($971 million) in its portfolio. Thiel, who made a now-famous $500,000 investment as one of the first outside investors in Facebook, has also been a very active angel investor. His recent investments include 21, which raised the largest round for a bitcoin startup earlier this week; SoFi, which is valued at $1.5 billion; and social content site Reddit ($474 million valuation).
