We spend a lot of money on our pets. Companies figured that out years ago, and so did private equity. Since the beginning of 2006, PE investors have backed 148 pet-related companies headquartered in the U.S. or Canada, according to the PitchBook Platform. Investors have shelled out some serious money to get exposure to pet owners, including the $1.7 billion take-private buyout of Petco in 2006. Several veterinary centers and pet food manufacturers made the list, as did K&H Pet Products, a manufacturer of heated beds for dogs and cats—indoor and outdoor. Anything for Molly Girl.
