There's been a slight lull in food & beverages exits. But the decrease in activity may be as deceptive as the calm before a storm, because each passing day adds more time to the holding period of a veritable host of food & beverages companies that were acquired around six to seven years ago.
According to PitchBook data, the median hold time for all types of exits has steadily risen, approaching six years in 2013. And numerous companies that were acquired about six years ago are still held by the same investors and haven't received any new funding: 44 from 2007, 41 from 2008 and 29 from 2009. All of those companies are still sitting in PE firms' portfolios, poised for buying, so it appears to be time for a resurgence in food & beverages exits.
