Scouting Companies that Serve the Military and Defense Space
November 11, 2013
"The land of the free and the home of the brave." Those words are meaningful to most every U.S. citizen, but that freedom and that bravery is provided in large part by a select few—those who serve in our military and defense organizations. In honor of Veteran’s Day, we decided to use the PitchBook Platform to highlight VC investment in companies that, at least in part, serve the military and defense space.
Over the last ten years, 280 such companies completed financings, totaling about $3.27 billion in capital invested. Accounting for the largest portion of deal flow in that time was the IT industry (42%), which saw 267 completed deals, followed by B2B (33%), B2C (9%), Energy (7%), Healthcare (5%) and Materials and Resources (3.5%). The largest single financing belonged to SeaMobile, an at-sea communications, connectivity and content services provider that raised an $89 million round in 2006. Military and defense-related companies have already landed 36 financings in 2013 to date, including November deals for CyPhy Works ($7 million Series A) and RallyPoint ($5 million Series A), the latter of which provides an online network for active duty military members and veterans to connect with one another and "help make military life better."
