The key to successfully integrating a new acquisition is for the acquirer to think about the integration process early on, and in conjunction with the overall due diligence process. According to CohnReznick principal Jeremy Swan, somewhere between 50% and 80% of the acquisitions that fail do so for one major reason—the acquisition was not properly integrated by the private equity firm or other acquirer. Whether it’s the integration of accounting systems, IT infrastructure, the finance and HR teams, or other considerations, the process must be fully thought through so that the combined businesses can operate smoothly on the day the acquisition closes.
