Super-Sized Deal for Supercell: $1.53B for a 51% Stake
October 16, 2013
In May 2011, Finnish game developer Supercell secured a $12 million investment led by Accel Partners, valuing the company at $52 million. This week Supercell went a little bigger, selling a 51% stake in the company for a reported $1.53 billion and garnering a whopping $3 billion valuation. SoftBank is reportedly paying ¥150 billion ($1.53 billion) for its majority stake, with 20 percent of that investment coming from its subsidiary GungHo Online Entertainment. Supercell, which also raised $130 million this past April (at a $770 million valuation), will use the massive new investment to fuel its global expansion. Additional company backers include Index Ventures, Institutional Venture Partners and London Venture Partners, among others.
