Surgical Devices Pass Therapeutic Devices in Capital Raised
September 17, 2012
Since the beginning of 2009, 517 venture capital firms have invested in 458 U.S. companies primarily associated with the Devices and Supplies sector of the Healthcare industry. The Therapeutic Devices sub-sector accounts for about 31% of the activity, followed by the Surgical Devices (26%) and Diagnostic Equipment (24%) sub-sectors. Although Therapeutic Devices has lead in capital invested since 2009, Surgical Devices companies have taken in the most capital at least for this year. Powered by large rounds like Sientra's $65 million (raised in March) and TriVascular's $60 million (raised in June) financings, this sub-sector has seen a whopping $572 million in capital invested flow in this year to date, compared to the $364 million in Therapeutic Devices, which hasn't seen a deal over $33 million yet this year.
