Tencent has acquired a 20% stake in Pocket Gems, a developer of mobile games and interactive entertainment, for a reported $60 million. Capital from the investment will be used to support global expansion, with the goal of growing the platform to reach over 1 billion players worldwide. Pocket Gems’ Mantis Engine has full native support for 3D graphics with a small memory footprint optimized for mobile devices. The company was valued at $15.6 million after a 2010 $5.5 million Series A round. Its backers include Great Oaks Venture Capital, Redpoint Ventures and Sequoia Capital, among others.
