Remember that 80s movie with Nicolas Cage—“Raising Arizona”? Irrelevant to this article is that it was one of Cage’s last decent movies; relevant are both words in the movie’s title. VC activity in the copper-producing, cactus-possessing state has been on the rise as of late. Since the beginning of 2010, VC investors have completed 91 deals involving Arizona-headquartered companies, according to the PitchBook Platform. During that timeframe, the number of deals each year has increased, more than doubling from 17 in 2010 to 36 in 2012. In that same span, total capital invested in Arizona-based companies tripled from $100 million to $314 million.
