Hyde Park Venture Partners’ recent closing of its inaugural fund at $25 million made us curious to see how many other small funds have been raised in recent years. According to the PitchBook Platform, 131 U.S. venture capital funds sized $25 million or less have been closed since the beginning of 2007. Those funds run as small as $90,000—the amount raised by Vision Ventures’ first fund, which closed this past April. On the other end of the spectrum, $25 million was an amount also reached by 11 other firms (in addition to Hyde Park) such as Lerer Ventures, InCube Ventures and MPM Capital.
During that timeframe, 2012 saw the highest number of funds close at $25 million or less (28). It was 2007, however, that had the most committed capital for such funds, reaching $334 million.
