Although it's often overshadowed by the Bay Area, Los Angeles has a burgeoning startup community that's seen a surge of VC dollars invested this year, as well as a handful of notable exits, e.g. Dollar Shave Club. Since the start of 2013, 986 VC investors have participated in at least one of the roughly 1,000 deals completed in the LA metro area, according to the PitchBook Platform. Capital invested there annually has steadily grown of late, with this year already setting a record at $3.9 billion thus far. The largest proportion of deals done in the timeframe were for software startups (39.1%), followed by commercial services (10.4%) and media (10.1%).
