The past decade has brought a rapid increase in both software startups and people interested in becoming developers. The US Department of Labor projects employment of developers to grow 17% from 2014 to 2024, compared to 7% for all occupations. This popularization has given rise to a new industry full of products and services designed to support software development in various ways—and some VCs are moving to capitalize on the growing market.
Since the beginning of 2010, 361 venture firms have participated in at least one of 282 deals backing software development application startups, according to the PitchBook Platform. Annual capital invested via these rounds has constantly increased in that timeframe, reaching $1.2 billion so far in 2016. While median round amount hovered around $3 million between 2011 and 2014, it has risen to $15 million so far this year.
