Although flashier industries, such as fintech and IoT, seem to be generating the most buzz among venture circles, there are other sectors that make up a sizeable portion of overall investment activity. Big Data, for example, accounted for roughly 5% of the total global venture capital invested in 2015, according to the PitchBook Platform. In fact, since the beginning of 2013, VC investment in Big Data has increased each year in terms of both deal count and capital invested.
Cumulatively in that time period, 1,054 VC investors have participated in 1,221 Big Data deals—442 of which were completed in 2015—with an overall value of $12.8 billion. The U.S. has seen the lion’s share of that capital( 88.1%), followed by Israel (2.3%) and the U.K. (1.7%). Of the 20 most active VC investors in Big Data, only two are headquartered outside of the state of California.
