Bitcoin has made the news again and again during 2013—from its value surges and drops to regulatory/legal issues and businesses accepting the digital currency. Several investors have also taken notice, with 24 VC financings for Bitcoin-related companies, such as Bitcoin transaction and exchange platforms and makers of Bitcoin mining technology, completed over the last couple years, according to the PitchBook Platform. In total, those transactions have involved over $58 million of venture capital coin.

The investments have come in many different sizes, ranging from thousands of dollars to the $25 million of Series B funding recently raised by Coinbase. That transaction was led by Andreessen Horowitz and also involved participation from existing investors Union Square Ventures and Ribbit Capital. Coinbase is a Bitcoin wallet and platform where merchants and consumers can transact with Bitcoin. Despite that large financing though, the median investment size for Bitcoin-related companies sits at a much smaller $1.2 million.
