In a press release covering Beringea’s recent investment in Abe's Market (story featured in today’s newsletter), the firm’s managing director, Jeff Bocan, stated, “Over the past decade, consumers have begun to understand the impact natural and organic products have on health, wellness and the environment.” We dove into the PitchBook Platform to see if the data backs up Mr. Bocan’s assertion—and indeed it does. In fact, 2012 was the hottest year ever for VC-backed companies involved in the Organic and Natural Consumer Non-Durables industry. Overall, 26 companies have received VC funding to bring their wholesome goods to the marketplace, spanning 46 deals. And, while 2009 and 2010 showed a decrease in VC investments, the industry has made a major rebound in the last two years.
