Since the start of 2010, the annual number of VC deals involving European fintech startups has risen dramatically from just 28 to 161 in 2014, according to the PitchBook Platform. Total capital invested has increased similarly, from $54 million in 2010 to a whopping $1.68 billion in 2014. To date in 2015, there have been 78 deals totaling $643 million invested.
A large amount of the capital invested has gone to companies in the U.K. (42.2%) and Germany (38.2%), the next closest country being the Netherlands (8.5%). These three countries have seen median deal size increase from an average of $1.5 million between 2010 and 2014 to $7.6 million so far in 2015. Notable financings include Amsterdam-based Adyen’s $250 million raise in December 2014 and London-based Funding Circle’s $150 million round in April.
