Since the beginning of 2011, 237 companies headquartered in the U.S. Midwest have received VC funding, taking in a total of more than $1.6 billion according to the PitchBook Platform. The biggest chunk of that capital invested total came in 2011 ($719 million), a year that set the high-water mark in the region for at least the past decade. Capital invested dropped off substantially the following year to $214 million but has been on the rise each year since, reaching $390 million in 2014 to date. During the time frame, the Midwest's IT sector has accounted for the largest portion of the deal flow (41%), increasing its deal share each year from 29% in 2011 to 52% thus far in 2014. The next most active industries have been healthcare (24%), B2C (16%) and B2B (9%).
