What's the 'Big Deal'? VC-Backed Cos. Break Record in 1Q 2014

Every once in a while, a startup is fortunate enough to be in a position to raise as much VC funding as it needs. And every once in a while, that results in some massive financing rounds. But the rate at which VC-backed companies have been landing $50 million+ financings in 2014 has been remarkable. According to the PitchBook Platform, the first quarter of 2014 saw more $50 million+ VC rounds (63) than any other quarter, ever. And with 83 of these deals completed in 2014 to date, this year is on pace to easily break the record for a single year (164 in 2000).
Included in today's newsletter are two such financings: ProNAi Therapeutics' $59.5 million Series D and Principia Biopharma's $50 million Series B. But despite both of these companies coming out of the healthcare sector, it has actually been the IT space that has produced the most companies raising $50 million or more in a single round this year (31).
