Classifying companies by industry can be tricky. Data providers have to tread a delicate balance between brevity and utility. Here at PitchBook, we go beyond just assigning an industry code like B2B or B2C, slicing our data with verticals ranging from 3D printing to adtech. To showcase one use of this feature, we found the total venture capital invested in key tech verticals in 2014, then broke it down by investors and the aggregate value of rounds they participated in:
Several trends in VC are exemplified by this relatively succinct list, including the increase in VC investment by hedge funds and other non-traditional VC investors, and the continued venture investment into startups that are disrupting industries ripe for change.
