Women in VC

An exceptional year for female founders still means a sliver of VC funding

US startups founded solely by women raised 83% more VC funding in 2021 than the previous year, but that is only 2% of the total capital garnered by VC-backed startups.

US startups founded solely by women raised nearly $6.4 billion of venture funding in 2021, 83% higher than the total raised in 2020, according to PitchBook data.

The accelerated pace of funding is part of an exceptionally strong year for VC investment across the US, which eclipsed its previous record and topped nearly $330 billion in 2021.

Despite the surge in overall numbers, companies founded solely by women faced a disproportionate blow and garnered 2% of dollars invested in VC-backed startups in the US throughout the year.
