The top 10 VC investors in European fintech companies

February 20, 2019
Europe has long been described as the "old continent," conjuring images of ancient institutions and outdated bureaucratic processes. While for some areas of the region the picture seems apt—we do still have monarchies and castles—there is one industry where Europe is at the forefront of innovation: fintech.

This year has seen an explosion of high-profile venture capital deals in the space, surpassing the US by nearly €100 million. A few weeks ago, banking startup OakNorth raised $440 million from SoftBank's Vision Fund and Clermont in the continent's biggest-ever fintech deal in VC. The round beat the previous record $300 million, set by N26 only a month before. In fact, VC fintech fundraising is rapidly approaching the €1 billion mark less than two months into the year, as startups have secured nearly €921 million across 33 deals, per the PitchBook Platform. For comparison, the first two months of 2018 saw only €248 million in capital raised.

The surge in activity suggests that 2019 will eclipse all others for fintech as the sector continues to mature. But, who are the investors propelling the industry into record-breaking heights?
