February 5, 2013
The Blackstone Group has acquired a controlling interest in two Maldives-based seaplane operators, Maldivian Air Taxi and Trans Maldivian Airways. Together, the two airlines will operate 44 seaplanes and conduct over 10,000 annual flights in Maldives, a tourist destination with over 1,000 islands. Both MAT and TMA connect resort islands with the Hulhule International Airport, and employ a combined 900 people. Blackstone noted an increase in tourism to Maldives over the last ten years, with an all-time high tourist arrival of almost one million tourists in 2012.
