Eric Schmidt to step down as executive chairman of Alphabet

Google parent company Alphabet has announced that Eric Schmidt will leave his position as executive chairman after 17 years to become an advisor on science and technology issues. He'll also continue to serve on the company's board. Prior to becoming Google's CEO, Schmidt was the chairman and CEO of software maker Novell. Alphabet expects that the board will appoint a non-executive chairman.
