Ethos Capital buys .org domain name registry

The .org domain is now under private equity's purview.
Ethos Capital, a tech-focused firm created earlier this year by former Abry Partners executive Erik Brooks, has agreed to acquire the Public Interest Registry (PIR) from the Internet Society, which is based in northern Virginia.
The deal will reportedly strip PIR, the seller of .org domains, of its nonprofit status, raising questions for the second time in six months about the future affordability of .org domains, which are often used by other nonprofits. The issue also attracted controversy in June, when ICANN, the organization that manages all online domain names, removed price caps for .org domains.
