Healthcare company Grifols (MCE: GRF, NASDAQ: GRFS) has completed its acquisition of the Hologic (NASDAQ: HOLX) donor screening unit for $1.85 billion. Grifols financed most of the transaction with a $1.7 billion loan, paying the difference with cash. The acquired unit conducts R&D related to and manufactures instruments based on nucleic acid testing used to detect infectious agents in blood and plasma donations. The deal also includes the division's intellectual property rights and a production plant in San Diego.
