Healthcare Devices & Supplies Activity Holds Steady

Apax Partners, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board have completed their public-to-private buyout of Kinetic Concepts (NYSE: KCI). The investing group paid $68.50 per share, putting the total transaction value at about $6.1 billion, including outstanding debt. Kinetic Concepts is a medical technology company that provides therapies and products for the wound care, tissue regeneration and therapeutic support system markets.
Since the beginning of 2008, PE investors have invested in 156 companies primarily involved in the Healthcare Devices & Supplies industry, according to the PitchBook Platform. With 39 deals completed so far this year, 2011 is on track to match last year's final deal count of 44, which represented a strong recovery from 2009. The Medical Supplies and Therapeutic Devices sectors are leading the 2011 activity, having accounted for 33% and 26%, respectively, of this year's deals to date.
