More heat for Uber after Daimler leads $250M Via investment
September 05, 2017
Car giant Daimler has led an investment into ridesharing startup Via, with TechCrunch reporting the amount raised as $250 million. The deal will see Daimler's Mercedes Benz Vans pumping $50 million into a new joint venture with Via to bring its offering to Europe, with its services expected to launch in London this year.
The move bolsters Daimler's continued investment in the European ridehailing scene. The business merged its mytaxi app with UK-based Hailo this year, and has since bolted on several more companies including Greece's Taxibeat and Romania's Clever Taxi.
What's more, it also adds another business to the increasing number of startups trying to topple Uber in Europe. Via will reportedly look to expand its service into Paris after its London debut.
