May 3 is National Teacher Appreciation Day in the U.S., so this seemed the perfect time to examine the state of PE investor activity in education & training services. While deals like the will-they-or-won't-they sale of Apollo Education Group could give numbers a boost, 2016 has started fairly slowly. Following five consecutive years of increasing deal count in the space, we may be on track for a second straight YoY decline.
PE investors have completed 23 deals in education & training so far this year, according to the PitchBook Platform, after 99 such transactions were closed in 2015. Those figures are trending down from a peak in 2014. Between 2009 and 2014, the number of investments nearly doubled, climbing at a steady rate from 66 to 120. Interestingly, since the start of 2012, activity has been a nearly even split between the U.S. and Europe: 193 deals in the U.S., 183 in Europe.
