Private equity giant KKR was the world's most active PE investor of 2014, according to our latest league tables report, with over 70 deals completed last year. It's an impressive tally to be sure, but to dig a little deeper we decided to hone in on where the firm has been investing—both by location and industry—compared to previous years.

Here are a few trends we spotted in our platform:
• About half of KKR's PE investments last year were made outside the U.S., the highest percentage for the firm since 2010. The international activity has continued into this young year so far.
• KKR made over 20 deals in Europe in 2014, more than twice its count from 2013. Last year's activity on the continent spanned roughly a dozen countries, including several transactions in Spain.
• The percentage of the firm's investments overall in the energy industry dropped for a third straight year, falling from 19% in 2011 to less than 7% in 2014.
