Quixey, a search engine for apps, has raised a $50 million Series C round of funding led by Alibaba Group. The company partners with major app stores, search engines, manufacturers, carriers and Web platforms to power app search globally, while also providing sponsored apps that target users at the point of discovery.
After being seeded with $400,000 in April 2011, Quixey raised nearly $3.8 million of Series A funds at a $10.5 million valuation just a few months later. That investment was followed by a $20 million Series B round in 2012 that catapulted the company’s valuation to $85 million.
Quixey will use the new funds, which bring its total backing to over $74 million, to further develop its functional search technology (which allows users to find apps by describing what they want to do) and to strengthen its deep roster of employees.
