San Diego Shakes Things Up for VC

Year after year, California stands out as the U.S. state with the most VC-backed companies—and with Silicon Valley at its epicenter, the reason seems obvious. But, if we travel south down the San Andreas fault, we’ll find that San Diego is shaking things up all on its own. According to the PitchBook Platform, 129 companies with headquarters in San Diego have received VC funding since the beginning of 2010. While companies in the IT industry are a dominant force even in San Diego, the city’s real bread and butter comes from the healthcare industry, which has scooped up 59.8% of the capital invested during this time frame. As investors go, one firm in particular, Domain Associates, seems to have its eye on the Southern California gem. Domain has a whopping twelve active investments in San Diego-based companies, all of which belong to the healthcare sector.
