Bitcoin exploded onto the scene in 2012, when it took just a month for its price to rise from sub-$200 to over $1,100 for each bitcoin; its current price is roughly $440. While the price has generally stabilized, bitcoin's viability came under fire in January when a long-time bitcoin developer claimed that the bitcoin experiment has failed. But venture investors may disagree.
According to the PitchBook Platform, startups focused on bitcoin and other cryptocurrency technologies have closed 217 VC rounds valued at over $1 billion over the past six-plus years. A majority of that total (~$883 million) has come in since the beginning of 2014. Each of the top five most active VCs in the space has at least 10 digital currency portfolio companies, and seven of the top 10 have made an investment in the past six months.
