California's VC scene is usually associated with Silicon Valley and a focus on information technology, but the state's southern region has its own thriving venture ecosystem that differs quite a bit from its neighbor to the north. Since the beginning of 2010, 919 VC investors have backed companies headquartered in Southern California, according to the PitchBook Platform, investing a total of $13.3 billion across over 1,350 deals. During that span, by far the largest portion of the capital invested has gone to the region's healthcare sector (38%), with IT (21%) and B2C (21%) following. For perspective, during the same span, the majority of capital invested in the Bay Area has flowed into its IT space (55% share), with healthcare (14%) and B2C (14%) following way behind.
Of the 919 VCs active in Southern California since 2010, 187 manage between $100 million and $500 million of assets, while another 78 manage between $500 million and $1 billion.
