Top Investor Tuesday — Private Equity in U.S. Retail
November 25, 2015
In light of Petco's announced $4.6 billion secondary buyout, and with Black Friday just around the corner, we felt it was timely to focus this week on the U.S. retail sector, where PE investors appear to have cooled their interest in recent years. Firms have completed no more than 49 U.S. retail deals in each year since 2013, a roughly 20% drop from the 61 deals closed in both 2011 and 2012. Within the sector, internet retail companies have become increasingly popular targets, amounting to about 30% of deals in the space the past two years—up from 20% in 2013. Of the 211 PE investors active in U.S. retail since 2010, 49 have between $500 million and $2 billion in assets under management, while 78 manage $2 billion or more.
