Maybe “fashion” really is catching on with the masses. Or perhaps companies are finding new and unique ways to market and sell apparel to finicky consumers (e.g. LE TOTE—the Netflix of clothing). Whatever it is, VC investments in the clothing industry are increasing at a dazzling pace. Since the beginning of 2007, VC investors have completed 126 deals involving U.S.-headquartered clothing companies, according to the PitchBook Platform. During that timeframe, the number of deals completed each year has increased, more than quadrupling from 10 in 2009 to 44 in 2012. The number of deals completed so far in 2013 has just about caught up to 2011’s total already. Overall, investors have hemmed about $536 million into the industry since 2007.
