The American University (AU) manages an endowment fund which is located in Washington, District of Columbia. Founded in 1893, as a private, independent, coeducational institution, under the auspices of The United Methodist Church. The university actively encourages a commitment to public service, inclusive participation in university governance, equity and equal access, and an appreciation of diverse cultures and viewpoints. The university's endowment is managed by the university's endowment office and the earnings from endowment investments support scholarships, chairs, professorships, fellowships, basic research, as well as academic and public service programs. The endowment is governed by the university's board of trustees and the finance and investment committee.
