Biography

Mr. Rodney Northey serves as Partner & Certified Specialist (Environmental Law) at Gowling WLG International. He focuses on environmental approvals, hearings and appeals. He has in-depth experience with the full range of approval regimes involving the environment - including land use, resource extraction, transportation, energy, waste and water infrastructure. Proponents retain him to prepare or revise their regulatory strategies. He approaches project approvals strategically, integrating different regimes, identifying inconsistencies and anticipating conflicts. He is an adjunct faculty member at Osgoode Hall Law School's Municipal Law LLM program for its course on environmental protection. He is recognized by his peers in national and international listings, including Who's Who Legal: The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in Canada. Throughout his career, he has been active in environmental law reform. He has been retained by the federal government to deal with law reform on the precautionary principle, applying environmental assessment to Crown corporations and applying environmental assessment to projects outside Canada. He has also appeared before parliamentary committees on constitutional law and environmental assessment. He was a member of the 2004 task force leading to the development of Ontario's two-million-acre greenbelt and was also part of the executive appointed to the Minister of the Environment's panel on environmental assessment reform for green projects in energy, transportation and waste sectors (2004-2006).
