Biography

Mr. Wouter Meuleman serves as Partner at Illumina Ventures. Wouter served as Director, Venture Investments at Illumina. He serves as Board Member at RedShift BioAnalytics. He is seconded from Illumina and brings broad experience in technology development, molecular biology and Next Generation Sequencing. Prior to joining the fund, his main focus was on venture investing and M&A. He serves as Board Member at Biota Technology, Ribometrix and DNA Script. He served as Board Observer at Desktop Genetics. Previously he has also held roles in both research and product development at Illumina, where he was instrumental in the development of sequencing platforms such as the MiSeq, the sourcing and evaluation of new technology opportunities, and competitive benchmarking. An electrochemist by training Wouter had his earliest entrepreneurial experience as the first employee for Oxford University spin-out Oxamer, a company founded by Lasker-award winner Prof. Sir Edwin Southern, where he contributed to the development of a benchtop DNA microarray fabrication platform. Later as part of Oxford Gene Technology, he continued working with Southern on novel applications for DNA microarrays including a microfluidic platform for single cell gene expression analysis. Wouter obtained a joint BSc/MSc in Chemistry from the University of Ghent, Belgium, a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, U.K, and an MBA from the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, U.K.
