Biography

Dr. Michael Flavin is the Founder and serves as the Chief Executive Officer at Shamrock Structures. He also served as Chief Executive Officer at Cell Habitats. He also serves as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman at Advanced Life Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of new drugs to fight infection, inflammation and cancer, where he has led the development of the oral antibiotic cethromycin through NDA submission and the HIV drug calanolide A from discovery through phase II clinical trials. During this timeframe, he led the company's IPO and follow-on financings. Prior to Advanced Life Sciences, Dr. Flavin founded and served as the Chief Executive Officer at MediChem Life Sciences, a premier drug discovery and development company focused on chemistry and biology. He oversaw the company's IPO and acquisition of ThermoGen, a protein expression company, and Emerald Biostructures, a structural biology company, as MediChem subsidiaries. Dr. Flavin has 45 publications in scientific journals and 20 U.S. Patents in the fields of organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry and biochemistry. He has been awarded several grants from the National Institutes of Health to further his research in HIV, hepatitis B and cancer drug discovery. Dr. Flavin is also the recipient of several awards, including the Sr. Margaret Wright Graduate Award from the University of Illinois, the Chicago Area Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame and the Year 2000 Illinois High Tech Award. Dr. Flavin received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Notre Dame and his Ph.D. degree in medicinal chemistry from University of Illinois at Chicago. After completing his postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, he was a Senior Research Scientist at Baxter prior to founding MediChem.
