Biography

Mr. Sunil Nair served as a Non-Executive Partner at Surya Capital Management. He was the Founding Partner and for 16 years Managing Partner / Managing Director, of Citi Venture Capital International ("CVCI"), one of the world's largest emerging market private equity businesses with over USD 7 billion in assets under management with investments in Asia, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. He established and developed CVCI's private equity business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and India including setting up the investment teams, leading investment transactions, developing investment processes, and formulating/executing investment strategy. He managed c 50 % of CVCI's investments and investment professionals and was a member of CVCI's Global Investment and Management Committees. One of the leading exponents of structured private equity transactions and amongst the most successful emerging markets private equity investment professionals, he has led / co-led 41 transactions investing equity of over USD 2 billion on behalf of CVCI in buyouts, expansion capital, privatizations, restructurings, and industry consolidations. His global transactional expertise spans multiple sectors - pharmaceuticals, retail, transportation, telecommunications, real estate, banking, food/beverages, and logistics. He has mentored and developed several leading companies over the last two decades. Prior to CVCI, he was responsible for originating and structuring fixed-income derivatives at Salomon Smith Barney and for Strategic Planning for the Capital Markets business of Citibank in New York. He was previously a Strategy Consultant with McKinsey and Company in New York / Stamford wherein he advised senior management at several leading global companies including JP Morgan, BNP Paribas, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. He received his M.B.A. (specializing in Finance and Strategy) from Yale University, USA, where he was awarded the Academic Excellence Award for Best Student. He also holds an M.S. degree in Economics from the Scuola Superiore E M Milan, Italy (ENI International Scholarship and special mention for outstanding academic performance), and a Master's degree in Commerce from Loyola College, University of Madras where he received the Gold Medal for Best Student.
