Biography

Dr. Gilberto Schwartsmann is a Co-Founder and serves as Chief Medical Officer at Instituto de Oncologia Kaplan. Dr. Schwartsmann is a professor of Oncology at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, faculty of medicine, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He is a specialist in Oncology at Royal Marsden Hospital and Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, UK. He is a Ph.D. in Pharmacology of Anticancer Drugs at the Department of Medical Oncology, Free University, Amsterdam. He did his Postdoctoral fellowship through the joint program of the US National Cancer Institute and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). Director of the EORTC New Drug Development Office of the EORTC and member of the EORTC General Board. He is the President of the SOAD Cancer Research Foundation and the Supervisory Board of the Children's Cancer Institute of Rio Grande do Sul. Dr. Gilberto is a full member of the National Academy of Medicine and the Sul-Rio-Grandense Academy of Medicine. He has about 200 original articles listed on PubMed, About 2000 citations in the ISI Citation Index. He is the holder of three patents in the area of new drugs and diagnostic tests in Oncology. To date, he has supervised more than 60 dissertations and/or doctoral theses in Oncology at UFRGS Faculty Member of the European Society of Medical Oncology, having held various leadership roles in the American Society of Clinical Oncology He is or has served on the Editorial Board of several international journals, such as Lancet Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Cancer Treatment Reviews, European Journal of Cancer, Investigational, New Drugs and others. Doctor Honoris Causa by USAL, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is a Physician at the Cancer Center at the Ernesto Dornelles Hospital.
